In “The Sun Is Just a Hole” I came back to the technique I used in “Dreams”. This time, the video is based on two observations: An architectural feature in the house of my grandparents and a dream about a person disappearing. The film starts by describing a hole that connects the basement and the first floor of the house as well as its link to my childhood memories. The sequences outline a fictional story around that hole, the character of which is found again in the objects of a cup and an egg. These transformed images, drawn and animated by hand, help in deconstructing the narration and follow an intuitive flow of forms and actions. I chose to work with two channels to combine text, image and animation through zooms, different speeds and juxtapositions to have a constant interaction between those elements. All throughout the story two symbols become apparent: The “sun” and the “hole”. In setting up these opposites the plot explores their coincidence and dissimilarity that contain both orientation and disorientation, disappearing as well as emerging. I am interested in how architectural elements shape our vision and in using its structure and space as a stage for spiritual experiences and thought experiments.
